PHILIPS' HANDY-VOLUME ATLAS OF THE COUNTY OF LONDON

This map is a copy of the ninth (last) edition of Philips' Atlas. It looks as much like the printed version as is possible in this medium, but is easier to use and see. Published in about 1922, some parts do not appear to have been updated much since before WW1. It does include the numbered Postal 'Sub Districts', introduced in 1917 and some of the special maps and plans are over-printed with information current up to about 1929.
It was given to me by my father, Robert Frederick Albert (Bob) Hunt. During the London Blitz of 1940 Bob was a Boy Scout and acted as a 'fire watcher' - extinguishing incendiary bombs or reporting via the nearest telephone box any house set alight. He recorded high explosive bomb hits with a pencil X, joined by a line if they were part of one bomber's 'stick'. You can see these on Plate 14.
The original owner was Bob's older brother, Arthur William Ronald (Soney) Hunt. On the night of 10th October Bob returned home to discover their house, at 126 High Road Leytonstone, badly damaged by a nearby bomb. Soney died later that night in Whipps Cross Hospital of the injuries he received in the blast. In the careful official language of the time, his death was described, with many others, as 'due to War operations'.
